Many teachers and pre-service teachers have heard at some point or another that we cannot think of students as being blank slates upon which we can freely write the laws of physics.  Students carry conceptions with them into the classroom that we cannot ignore in our teaching.  But what are we to do about these conceptions?  The answer, it turns out, depends upon the structure of those conceptions, which we can discern from observation of how our students reason in the classroom.  This book chapter provides an overview of the major theoretical models for thinking about student reasoning: the Theory view, the Pieces view, and the Ontologies view.  The emphasis is placed on how the three models prescribe different instructional interventions in the classroom, meaning that teachers should respond to students differently, depending on which model best aligns with what is observed in their students’ reasoning.  Many carefully-chosen examples and specific recommendations of curriculum make the chapter a practical resource for every teacher to have in his or her teaching toolbox.
